Karwa Chauth Wear & Gifting Guide
Every October, our WhatsApp fills up with the same two questions from customers: "what should I wear for Karva Chauth this year" and "what do I gift my wife/mom/sister." So instead of answering it forty times individually, here's the whole thing in one place - written the way we'd actually tell a friend, not a search engine.
What should women wear on Karwa Chauth?
Honestly, red and maroon are still winning, but we're seeing a lot more women pick deep pink and even bottle green with gold zari this year. If you want the classic bridal-adjacent look, a heavily embroidered saree does the job every time. Going for a lehenga instead? Great choice if it's your first Karva Chauth as a married woman and you want photos that look like an event, not just an outfit.
Not everyone wants that much weight on them though, especially since you're fasting from sunrise. A well-cut suit set is our quiet recommendation - it looks festive, moves easily, and doesn't need constant adjusting during the pooja. Chikankari or bandhani pieces are the move if you'd rather be comfortable than dramatic. Whatever you land on, a good dupatta pulled over the head for the moon sighting finishes the look properly. There's no wrong answer here, just depends on how your evening is shaping up - a big family gathering versus a quiet one at home.
What are traditional Karwa Chauth gifts?
Gifting used to be a one-way thing - husband gifts wife - but that's changed a lot. Mothers-in-law gift daughters-in-law, sisters gift each other, friends exchange small things too. The sargi thali is still the heart of the morning: sweets, dry fruits, maybe a few snacks the mother-in-law traditionally sends over. For the evening, bangles and a fresh set of mehendi cones are almost always welcome.
If you want to gift something with more weight, jewelry that matches whatever outfit she's already picked works well, or you could just gift the outfit itself and let her build the rest around it - that's usually the gift that gets remembered longest. We put together a Festive Wear collection with exactly this in mind, in case you're shopping last minute (we won't judge, most people are). If you're gifting for someone who prefers understated over heavy work, our Sarees edit has a lot of lighter, everyday-festive options too.
A few more things people ask us
What colors are considered auspicious for Karwa Chauth?
Red, maroon, pink, and gold, mostly because of what they symbolize in Indian tradition - love and a long married life. Green and yellow show up too, just less often.
Can I wear something other than a saree?
Yes, and plenty of women do. Lehengas, suit sets, even a well-chosen chikankari kurta set are all fine. Wear what you'll actually enjoy fasting in for twelve-plus hours.
What's a good last-minute gift if I've completely forgotten?
A set of bangles or a small jewelry piece from a nearby store works in a pinch, but if you have even a day, a festive outfit from our Festive Wear range tends to land better and lasts longer than sweets.
